Bernice Notenboom, a member of the Everest expedition that includes Utahn Apa Sherpa, was with fellow climber Lhakpa Nuru when the Sherpa man was swept away in an avalanche and killed last week. Notenboom, a Dutch native who now lives in Canada, lived for a while in Utah's Castle Valley, outside Moab. Notenboom wasn't seriously injured in the mishap. But the entire expedition is grieving for Lhakpa Nuru, the father of three small children.
