5/21/2007 9:59:14 AM -- LAST TEAM TO ARRIVE, FIRST TO LEAVE
The team called Monday morning from Syangboche, where it is waiting for a helicopter to deliver the members to Kathmandu. Weather allowing, the team will arrive in Nepal's largest city Tuesday.
Apa expects a large crowd of media will be waiting. Team members are hopeful their message of the importance of the Sherpa people will be bolstered by their arrival after the successful and historical summit. Nepal's minister of tourism is also expected to be at the airport when the team arrives.
Apa said he is thankful for all the support the team has received from people around the world. He misses his family and looks forward to coming back to Salt Lake City.
Lhakpa is also excited to return to Salt Lake City. He wants to bring his three children to Utah, but there have been snags in the process to allow the children to come to the United States. The team has committed to staying with Lhakpa until the children get approval.
On a lighter note, the team enjoyed its departure from base camp as other teams looked on in envy that the SuperSherpas were heading home.
"When we arrived in base camp everybody asked, 'What are you doing coming so late?" Lhakpa said. "We were the last to come and the first to leave."
As of Monday morning, Everestnews.com said there were 362 summits of Everest and five deaths. Team members said they heard rumors of another accident Monday.
They are glad to be off the mountain.
